The Sing-Off: NBC Contest Returning for Season Two

The Sing-OffDespite achieving mediocre ratings during the show’s first season, NBC has decided to give The Sing-Off another try.

A competition for a cappella groups, The Sing-Off ran as a four episode special event in December. It began with a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.89 million viewers. The ratings dropped after that but then bumped back up to a 2.3 rating and a viewership high of 7.28 million viewers for the season finale.

Considering NBC’s current state, those numbers are good enough to bring the show back for another round. It surely doesn’t hurt that the series is relatively inexpensive to produce.

Viewers shouldn’t try to set their DVRs just yet though. NBC’s executive VP of alternative programming, Paul Telegdy, told TheWrap, “We’ll be bringing Sing-Off back. We don’t know when. But we believe we’ve found a little gem, one we can buff up and make better.”

What do you think? Are you glad to hear the show’s coming back? Is it better or worse than other reality competitions? Should it come back as a regular series or another special event?

UPDATE: It’s been confirmed that the show will return for the 2010-11 season with an eight episode competition.

Have been waiting to have news of the show returning. Still have the originals on DVR and replay them with the family just for that “good time” feel.

Would like to see one change. Select one song and have all the groups arrange and sing it. True comparison of styles and talent.

I think this was a fantastic show and I am glad that they are bringing it back. I have grown kids and they are picky about this kind of shows but after they saw it ( I had it recorded) they loved it. I have a grandson that sings at Highs school and he thought it was really good.

YAY! I can’t wait for the second season of “The Sing Off”!!! It’s nice to have something different from all the regular singing competitions out there. Acapella is difficult to do but beautiful to hear. I’m tired of American Idol. Please make this a regular series! Hope the next season will be showing soon! I can’t wait anymore!

I cant wait for the show to come back. It is a rare talent to find groups like this who can sing without instruments and I feel that It should be shown off more. I just feel that the show should be longer and have more contestants. I was able to get my brother addicted to it right after he heard NOTA sing Down. It was the best thing I have ever heard.

So the show is awesome but like i said, more contestants = More episodes= more people ratings….people were just hearing about it by the time the finale hit…so Do that and you have it made

I Love this show, it truly shows what talent is, with no background music and just your voice to carry you that is very hard to do. I truly enjoyed this show and I look forward to season two, three, four and so on.

THIS SHOW WAS INCREDIBLE! A CAPPELLA IS UNDERRATED AND DESERVES MORE PUBLICITY WHICH THIS SHOW PROVIDES! IT GIVES AN OPPORTUNITY TO MANY GROUPS AND ADDS ANOTHER GENRE TO MUSIC….My hope is that in the future iTunes will have an “A Cappella” Tab to select and purchase music from.

I am so stoked for this show to be back!! I didn’t think the first season got as much attention as it should have. It’s nice to see something pure on tv. It really lets music fans enjoy the beauty of the voice. I’m sick of stuff like American Idol. The Sing-Off brings such a beautiful spin to things. So worth making into a regular series. If American Idol has lasted this long, then The Sing-Off should be given a chance! It’s so unique!!

Nick Lachey was HORRIFIC as the “host”.
The show is 75% filler, and fills allt he expected categories of bad contest/reality TV.
If it was to be on agian, AT BEST I owuld randomly tune in for the actual performance parts.

I also firmly believe that the initial winners (if not ALL) were predetermined to reflect the network’s liking.
