The White Queen: “Cancelled” by BBC, No Season Two

The White Queen canceled, no season twoEven though Starz just premiered their new TV series, The White Queen, we already know there won’t be a second season.

Based on Philippa Gregory’s bestselling historical novel series The Cousin’s War, The White Queen tells the story of three very different women as they attempt to scheme, manipulate and seduce their way onto the English throne. The cast includes Max Irons, James Frain, Rebecca Ferguson, Janet McTeer, Ben Lamb, Amanda Hale, Tom McKay, Aneurin Barnard, David Oakes, Faye Marsay, and Eleanor Tomlinson.

The show is co-financed by the BBC in the United Kingdom and Starz here in the states. The 10-part series began airing on BBC1 in June and completed its run last Sunday night.

According to Broadcast Now, the BBC has maintained that The White Queen was intended to run just one season. However, Gregory had hinted that there were hopes to continue the drama via an adaptation of The White Princess. That novel follows the story of Elizabeth of York who went on to marry Henry VII, the first Tudor King.

It now appears that a continuation won’t be happening. A BBC spokesperson said, “The White Queen will not be returning, but it is important to note that it was never actually conceived as a returnable series.”

What do you think? Are you sorry that The White Queen won’t be continuing in some form? Are you glad that the story was designed to wrap after 10 episodes?

I loved this series! I am always attracted to the period pieces!! I was very much looking
forward to a second season and for it to go as far as Henry VIII .

Please consider it! I am attracted to the strong female roles in history!

I loved the series and would love to see it continue writhing the White Princess. I think I am going to drop Stars because there is nothing interesting on it now that this series has ended.

I really loved watching White Queen, there is so much more story left. The viewers need closure. I agree they should take it at least to King Henry VIII. How do we know the princess is not pregnant with King Richard’s child. What about the Whiye Queens son?

Season 2 needs to happen!!!!! I enjoyed watching this series and I have to say that I am very disappointed with BBC not bringing back a season 2. If there is no season 2 brought back I will stop watching BBC all together, if they cant follow through with this series of the White Queen, then how many other series are they going to show and disappoint us by not bringing back another season. BBC is a huge let down, cancel it instead!

Honestly I thought it sucked! Compared to other related shows such as The Tudors, Pillars of the Earth, and especially the Borgia’s, The White Queen was boring as hell…. The storyline was repetitive – Queen Elizabeth kept on whining and moaning over the same stuff, and having apparitions, Lady Margaret kept whining and praying and having apparitions, Queen Anne was always whining and spewing and just plain ugly-nasty… The battles were non-eventful, and even though I hung in there till the end, there was nothing after any of the episodes to make me feel as if I couldn’t wait until seeing the next one… (Other than the series finale, because my interest was slightly sparked by Richard’s attraction to Princess Elizabeth, which-no surprise there- also turned out to be very non-eventful…) I have to say that Max Irons was very good as King Edward – he’s quite sexy and has the potential to be as good an actor as his dad; as well as David Oaks, the reason for my watching this in the first place, because I loved him in the Borgia’s, but again he was so bland in this – the character was, a waste of good talent, and he’s starting to get type-cast with these now – but not as much as James Frain, who is a guaranteed line-up in any of these historical series… with pretty much the same dialog too… Like I said, puts me right to ZZZZZZZZZZ…..

This is my 2nd comment re: The White Queen”. I have been reading all the comments over the last few weeks since it was announced that there will be no season 2 and I am gratified to read so many others feel as disappointed and angry as I do. Do these comments get seen by BBC & Starz? If so, their faithful viewers need a response from them as to their reasoning to end the show and any plans for it to return. We need closure!

Well Angela, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I must say yours is in the minority as far as the comments to date. Have you read any historical info about this period? This show was very true to it. Weddings were pre-arranged between very young couples who didn’t know or love each other and as for looks and demeanor, were often “ugly-nasty”. The womens’ role was to procreate sons and keep their mouths shut in public. It was the way they used their womanly ways to gain power and influence that is so captivating. Have you seen “Reign”? Perhaps that show would be more satisfying to you. Personally , I found it lacking in so many ways.

There’s isn’t anything like it in terms of a show prior to the Tudor Dynasty. Please continue on at least until Henry the VIII. There must be enough material for a second season!
