TV show description:
This gritty anthology series revolves around race, class, and gender politics as it follows emotionally-charged crimes and the subsequent trials.

The first season begins with a home invasion in Modesto, California which results in the murder of war veteran Matt Skokie and a horrific assault on his wife Gwen.

Four suspects are brought into custody for the crimes. Though the suspects fit a profile, they and their situations are far more complicated than anyone would have initially believed.

Tony Gutiérrez (Johnny Ortiz) is an impressionable teen who got in way over his head even under the watchful eye of his dedicated and hard-working father, Alonzo Gutiérrez (Benito Martinez).

Hector Tontz (Richard Cabral) is a young man who’s lived life on the fringes of society and has made plenty of bad decisions while trying to survive.

The other two suspects are Carter Nix (Elvis Nolasco) and Aubry Taylor (Caitlin Gerard). They’re two incredibly lost souls whose addiction to drugs and to one another has become destructive and paralyzing. Carter’s sister Aliyah Shadeed (Regina King) is a devoutly religious woman who’s determined to help her brother.

Matt’s divorced and estranged parents, Russ Skokie (Timothy Hutton) and Barb Hanlon (Felicity Huffman), arrive in town to bury their son and are looking for some justice for his killing. They discover however that their son may not have been an innocent bystander in his own murder.

Gwen’s parents, Tom and Eve Carlin (W. Earl Brown and Penelope Ann Miller), are devastated by the attack on their daughter.

Told from the points of view of all those involved, this drama examines preconceptions on faith, family, gender, race, class and other aspects of our social experience.

In the second season, a male public high school student accuses members of a championship basketball team from a private school of sexually assaulting him at a school party. He alleges they photos of the incident and posted the images online.

In season three, a father named Luis Salazar (Benito Martinez) travels illegally from Mexico into the United States. Searching for his missing son, he discovers that modern servitude is thriving in the farmlands. Living in poverty and required to pay for their own food and other essentials, what little money the workers make is paid back to their employers, and because they will forever be in debt, they can never leave. Undocumented workers aren’t the only people targeted by this system.
