American Housewife: Cancel or Keep the ABC Sitcom?

American Housewife TV show on ABC: cancel or keep for season 2?ABC’s had a pretty good track record in the past couple years when establishing successful sitcoms. How have they done with the American Housewife TV show, the network’s only freshman comedy on Tuesday nights? Is it a keeper or, should it be cancelled?

American Housewife revolves around an average wife and mom, Katie (Katy Mixon). She does her best to stand out from the “perfect” housewives and their privileged children of Westport. Katie’s husband (Diedrich Bader) is a logical guy and supports her in every way he can, including working to ensure that their children (Meg Donnelly, Daniel DiMaggio, and Julia Butters) do not end up like everyone else in their neighborhood. Katie’s friends are played by Carly Hughes and Ali Wong.

The ABC TV show premiered on October 11th and averaged a 1.91 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.61 million viewers. It was a positive start in the ratings for American Housewife.

In week two, the demo dropped to a 1.65 rating with 5.75 million, a reasonable second episode decline of about 13%. The episode numbers have dwindled downward since then but have remained at a reasonable level. After nine installments, American Housewife is averaging a 1.56 in the demo with 5.56 million viewers.

While the numbers could be better, American Housewife is doing reasonably well. It’s tied lead-in The Middle in the demo and is easily outperforming the sitcoms that follow it — Fresh Off the Boat and The Real O’Neals.

Back in November, ABC gave American Housewife a full season order and has since ordered another installment, bringing the first season tally to 23 episodes.

As long as the ratings remain steady, American Housewife should survive to see a second season.

But, what do you think? Do you like the American Housewife TV show on ABC? Is it worth watching? Cancel or keep it?
