American Idol TV show on FOX ratings: cancel or renew?The ratings for this venerable singing competition have been falling for quite awhile and they saw a big drop last season. Will the numbers continue to fall or will they start to rebound? Could American Idol finally be cancelled? Stay tuned.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, American Idol will air twice a week, on Wednesday and Thursday nights, for only part of the season. For the first time, the results will be wrapped into the performance episodes. Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez, and Keith Urban return to the judge’s table.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically the following morning, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.

5/11 update: FOX has renewed American Idol for a final and 15th season.

Final season averages:2.23 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.11 million total viewers.

Reference point: The Wednesday episodes from season 13 averaged a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.25 million total viewers.

Note: These are the final national numbers (unless noted with an “*”). These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
