The Americans: FX Series Likely Ending with Season Five or Six

The Americans cancelled or renewed

Season four of The Americans premieres tonight. Recently, showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the new season and the future of the FX drama.

Set in the 1980s, The Americans stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as two Russian spies living undercover as a married couple in the United States.

Earlier, we reported that both Weisberg and Fields thought the series had another season or two to go. Their interview with The Hollywood Reporter seems to confirm the show will likely end in another couple of years:

We haven’t told them [FX] our thoughts for how the story ends, but we’ve had conversations with them about wrapping up after five or six seasons.

They’ve come to us and said that that’s not going to be a business decision from them — it’s a creative decision from us. So they’ve liberated us to do what’s going to be right for the show. There’s no danger that there will be a sudden end to the show. I think we’ll be able to reach the end that feels right to us dramatically.”

Weisberg added that the two have a “pretty good sense” of how they want the series to end:

We have a pretty good sense. I would say we got it down to about four different endings. So we’re pretty well honed in on a zone we’re going to go to, but we haven’t decided for sure. And the way that we work, it could also all change. As it gets closer, we could come up with something totally different that would surprise me.”

Season four of The Americans premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

What do you think? Do you watch The Americans? Do you think the series should end after another couple of series?
