What’s This TV Show About?
A prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock’s feature film, Psycho, airing on the A&E cable channel, Bates Motel stars Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke, and Nestor Carbonell, with Kenny Johnson recurring. Rihanna will guest as Marion Crane, a role originated by Janet Leigh in the 1960 movie. At the end of season four, Norman Bates (Highmore) murdered his beloved mother, Norma (Farmiga). Season five kicks off two years later, with Norman living a double life. He appears to be a happy, well-adjusted White Pine Bay resident. At home, though, he blacks out more often. Will the ‘Mother’ personality (Farmiga) assume complete control of his mind? Soon, Dylan Massett (Thierot) and Emma Decody (Cooke) will find themselves embroiled in the madness. Meanwhile, the incarcerated Alex Romero (Carbonell) plots to destroy his stepson and avenge the murder of his one true love.
Season Five Ratings
The fifth season of Bates Motel averaged a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.28 million viewers. Compared to season four, that’s down by 20% in the demo and down by 14% in viewership. Find out how Bates Motel stacks up against other A&E TV shows.
In May of 2016, the creators announced Bates Motel would end with a fifth and final season. The series has ended but, could there be a follow-up? Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Because the creators planned to end this psychological horror drama with season five, you could say that Bates Motel was not cancelled, but it is ending with season five, just the same. No matter how you slice it, there will be no season six. Ta ta, Norman.
