What’s in store for the final season of Bates Motel? Recently, showrunners Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about casting Rihanna as Marion Crane on the A&E TV series.
The drama is currently in its fifth and final season. Based on the film Psycho, the drama stars Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates, a young man with a murderous devotion to this mother. The cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell, and Olivia Cooke.
In the interview, Cuse revealed that Rihanna was already a fan of the show before taking on the iconic role of Crane, who was originally played by Janet Leigh in the Alfred Hitchcock film:
All of these things require a creative conversation. Once it became clear that she was interested in exploring the idea, Kerry and I got on the phone with her. We pitched what our idea was and she was very responsive. In any situation like this, you have to make sure you’re on the same page creatively and we had a really good conversation with her. That went a long way towards us making this happen.”
Ehrin later added:
It was a lot of pressure to make the appearance have a point as opposed to like, ‘Hey, we’re doing Psycho.’ That was really important to us. In the end we felt happy with where we got with it, just in terms of telling Norma and Norman’s story and bringing Marion Crane into that loop and having it all kind of lead to a meaningful conclusion.”
Rihanna makes her debut on Bates Motel in the episode “Dreams Die First,” which debuts tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on A&E.
