Battlestar Galactica: Olmos Says Season Four is Last

The 33rd Annual Saturn Awards were held last night in Universal City to honor top movies, TV shows and home videos in the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. There were some surprises at the event but the biggest news came before the party even got started.

Edward James Olmos, better known to fans as Commander Adama, told reporters on the red carpet that this would be the last season of Sci Fi’s Battlestar Galactica. (Warning: possible spoiler ahead.)

He told IESB, “This will probably be the most extraordinary season of Battlestar, it’s the final season so, it’s definitely going to be the most vicious.” Olmos confirmed that he was serious and that viewers should “enjoy it while it’s here.”

For If Magazine, Olmos mused, “We’re heading into the final season. This is the final season as we speak. All of us are very saddened by that, but we always knew there was going to be a conclusion and we would find Earth, so we will be finding Earth this season. I wish it would [keep going]. I could do 10 years like this season. I think that this is some of the finest usages of television that I have been a part of in my life. Bar none. I’ve been doing this for 42 years. I’ve done some really good work in television and motion pictures but there really is nothing like this show. I can honestly tell you that this is one of the finest dramatic pieces work on humanity I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) confirmed the news but wasn’t quite as definite as Olmos. She said, “Yeah, this might be, this may be our last year. If Eddie is saying it, I guess I can repeat it. I think part of the problem is that it’s an expensive show. [It’s a great show] but we don’t have the viewership that a great show should get.”

Keep in mind that Sci Fi has not announced that the series has been cancelled. In fact, back in late March, when asked if the upcoming season would be the last, Sci Fi’s Executive VP of Programming Mark Stern said, “At this point, we don’t know. It’s still early days. We need to sit with Ron [Moore] and David [Eick] to hear what their plans are for that [fifth] season, and what they’d like to do about any future seasons.”

If this is indeed the last year of Battlestar, what does this mean for the proposed prequel series Caprica? Olmos says,”That’s up to them, I have no idea, but as far as we know, in respects of the way we have this show constructed, this is the final season.” Stay tuned!
