Behind the Music: VH1 Sets Return Date of Superstar Bio Series

After being out of production for nearly seven years, VH1’s Behind the Music series is ready to take the stage once again.

Behind the Music first debuted in 1997. Episodes have presented profiles of musical performers; focusing on their backgrounds, their rise to fame and often the reason(s) for their decline in popularity. The show quickly became a staple of the cable channel and original episodes were produced until 2002. Reruns were aired for several years afterwards but eventually petered out in 2006.

As reported earlier this year, the popularity of a 2008 Behind the Music special, devoted to The New Kids on the Block reunion, inspired the series’ return to production.

Of the revival plans, Jeff Olde, VH1’s executive VP of original programming, said, “It felt like the time is right. There’s all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there’s other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around.”

Flash forward a few months later and the new season is set to kick off. The first new episode will air on Thursday, September 10th at 10pm. It’ll focus on the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive,” Lil Wayne, and will look at his childhood, his music, and his struggle to center stage

Other upcoming episodes of Behind the Music include pop songstress Pink (September 17th), “King of R&B” Bobby Brown (September 24th), rock star Bret Michaels (October 1st), the “King of the South” rapper T.I. (October 8th), and hip-hop megastar 50 Cent (October 13th).

What do you think? Excited for the return of Behind the Music or would you have preferred that VH1 try a different series and format?
