Beverly Hills, 90210: Jennie Garth’s Kelly Taylor Comes Home

Look for Jennie Garth to return to her old zip code this Fall as part of the CW’s new Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off.

Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas wrote the pilot script for the new 90210 TV show and included Garth’s Kelly Taylor character as a fashion design teacher. Thomas later left the project to work on his Cupid remake for ABC and the script was reworked by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah.

Word was that the network wasn’t going to make any offers to Garth until they took a look at the revised script. This news came around the same time that Garth dropped out of a starring role in CBS’ sitcom pilot called My Best Friend’s Girl, fueling rumors that she’d be coming onboard.

We’ve now learned that Garth will in deed be part of the 90210 spin-off but in a recurring role. Kelly works at West Beverly High but will now be a guidance counselor. She’ll no doubt pop in when the main characters need advice and as Garth’s schedule allows.

The CW hasn’t officially given a go-ahead for the new series but it’s assumed to be a done deal as the new show has name recognition, significant viewer anticipation, and fits with the network’s target demographic. Though Sachs and Judah reportedly have full plates already, the duo are in talks to sign on as series showrunners. Stay tuned!

UPDATE: The CW picked up the new 90210 series on May 11, 2008.
