Black-ish: Why the Series Is Doing a Good Times Homage

Black-ish TV show on ABC: season 2 (canceled or renewed?); Black-ish tribute to Good Times

There are Good Times ahead for Black-ish. Series creator Kenya Barris recently spoke with Variety about the ABC comedy’s upcoming Good Times tribute.

The season two finale will feature an homage to Norman Lear’s classic 1970s sitcom.

In the interview, Barris said the finale will not only feature costumes and story inspired by Good Times, it will also imitate the sitcom’s multi-cam style—a format actress Tracee Ellis Ross had to get used to:

We shot the show multi-cam, and the cast had to prep. She was such a soldier, because she had to mouth her lines while someone said them offstage so we could block the episode and everyone could rehearse.

I think the staff and the cast and the crew really came together and melded the two time periods and matched up then and now. I really wanted to do a good job on it, and the cast really came in and stepped into the roles in really fun, funny ways.”

He added that both Good Times and Black-ish are ultimately about the same thing—family.

[‘Black-ish’] is about family, and ultimately that’s what ‘Good Times’ was about. No matter what they were going through, they always fell back to depending on the love of their family, and that’s the connection between those two shows.”

The season two finale of Black-ish airs on May 18th.

What do you think? Do you watch Black-ish? Are you a fan of Good Times? What other tribute episodes should Black-ish do?
