This satirical, animated adult comedy is set in fictional Mexifornia, a desert border town between the US and Mexico. It features the culture, politics, and life of the neighboring Buckwald and Gonzalez families.

Border Patrol agent Bud Buckwald (Hank Azaria) feels the changing demographics in his town will leave him an outsider. Bud’s wife, Janice (Alex Borstein), is somehow clueless, yet sage. Together, they have three children.

Determined neighbor Ernesto Gonzalez (Nicholas Gonzalez) has been in the country less than a decade. With his booming landscaping business, he is already more successful than Bud, which does not escape the latter’s notice.

Ernesto is married to the candid, practical Maria (Stephanie Escajeda). Their children include Ruiz (Efren Ramirez) and the mischievous Pepito (Jacqueline Pinol).

When the Buckwalds’ awkward, nerdy daughter, Becky (Borstein), gets engaged to Ernesto’s 21 year old college-educated nephew, J.C. (Gonzalez), Bud is furious. Due to a change in immigration law, J.C. is deported, leaving Bud more than pleased.

Bud and Janice’s son, Sanford (Judah Friedlander), is far cooler in his own mind, than anyone else’s. The Buckwald’s five year old daughter, Gert (Missi Pyle), is a beauty pageant enthusiast who owns a pet pig.

Bud lobbies to have a border wall built, funded by confiscated drug money. Once completed, the wall leaves him out of a job, and hurts the local economy.

To counteract the affects of the wall, Bud smuggles immigrants back into the country. Ernesto bristles at the influx of immigrants.

At the instruction of his megachurch pastor, Bud invites Ernesto to his church. The minister hopes Ernesto will defect from his Catholic congregation, and bring his deep pockets with him.

After Ernesto starts attending the megachurch, the pastor works to draw more Mexican parishioners, by “his-pandering” to them. Bud and Erenesto work together to get things back to normal, but their plans go awry.

As Bud, Ernesto, and their families interact, can these men form a meaningful friendship?
