TV show description:
This docu-series delves into the lives of caregivers and the cutting edge medical cases they confront. The personal stories of doctors, nurses, and patients are interwoven together to give viewers a sense of the real-life drama that goes on inside America’s hospitals — from the young resident in crisis doubting that she’s good enough to become a Harvard-trained doctor to the deployed soldier’s pregnant wife praying for a miracle surgery to save her baby.

Filmed over four months at Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women’s, and Children’s Hospital Boston, this series breaks new ground in the documentary landscape.

Series Finale:
Episode eight
Joseph Helfgot is a high-powered Hollywood marketing executive and James Maki is a down on his luck Vietnam vet who destroyed his face in a drug-addled subway fall. Two very people who never would have met. Helfgot hoped for a surgery that would extend his life and mend his ailing heart. Instead, it is Maki who gets the second chance.

Maki owes his new lease on life to both Helfgot and the brilliant plastic surgeon, Dr. Bo Pomahac, once a political refugee who arrived in this country without a penny to his name — never thinking that he would one day make medical history.

A powerful story about two men, their will to live, the families who love them, and how loss can be transformed into a kind of victory.
First aired: August 24, 2010.

Note: Though ABC didn’t promote it as such, a representative has confirmed that this was a limited series so there won’t be a second season.
