Buckwild: Cancelled by MTV But May Return

Buckwild canceledFollowing the untimely death of Buckwild star Shain Gandee, MTV has reportedly cancelled the reality series. The show had been renewed for a second season back in February.

While the Mayor of Charleston is likely happy about the news, producer J.P. Williams is not.

He told THR, “This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy. They’ll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident doing what he does for a living [mudding] and they cancel the show? There’s something that smells of sh– here on every level.”

Following Gandee’s death from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, Williams says he was told on Friday that MTV was sticking with Buckwild. The plan was to shoot four more episodes (four had already been filmed) and a special dedicated to Gandee. Williams says he found out the network changed their mind yesterday and they had decided to cancel the series instead.

A special that was shot before Gangee’s demise is still expected to air but it’s unclear what will become of the four completed episodes.

Williams, who represents eight of the show’s castmembers, suggests that he’s going to continue filming the series and may produce a self-financed movie. “My job is to protect these kids,” he said, “This will get ugly.”

What do you think? Did MTV make the right call in cancelling the show? Do you hope that Buckwild continues elsewhere?
