Call the Midwife: Season Six of the PBS Drama Had to Be Rewritten Quickly

Call the Midwife TV show on PBS: canceled or renewed?

The new season of Call the Midwife doesn’t debut in the U.S. until April. However, creator Heidi Thomas recently told Radio Times she only had a few months to rewrite season six of UK drama.

The historical drama, which airs on PBS in the U.S., follows a group of nuns and midwives working in the destitute East End neighborhood of London. The cast includes Jessica Raine, Miranda Hart, Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, and Stephen McGann.

Speaking to Radio Times, Thomas said season six of the series had to be quickly rewritten after Miranda Hart dropped out due to scheduling conflicts:

We were thrilled when Miranda approached us, and I story-lined the series for her But at relatively short notice she had to withdraw.

I can’t say, but it was short. We were hopeful right up to the end that we could make it work, but we couldn’t.

I just rewrote the series without Miranda in it, which was sad because we would have loved having her in it… She is part of the CTM family. But it wasn’t meant to be.”

Season six of Call the Midwife premieres on PBS on April 2nd.

What do you think? Do you watch Call the Midwife? Are you sad Miranda Hart won’t be in the new season?
