FMI GLOBAL SALES FOR THE DISTINCTLY MODERN DRAMA CAPITAL

5 April 2016

FremantleMedia International (FMI) is celebrating three deals for the sharply observant drama Capital, with sales to Participant Media’s television network Pivot (US), Shaw (Canada) and BBC Worldwide (Australia and New Zealand). The three part series adaptation of the bestselling novel by John Lanchester revolves around the interconnected lives of a diverse group of Londoners who all reside on the same suburban street Pepys Road – but all is not as it seems. Capital is produced by one of the world’s leading scripted producers Kudos for BBC One in the UK.

Targeted by a mysterious hate campaign, each of the residents of Pepys Road receives an anonymous postcard through their front doors bearing the menacing message: “We Want What You Have”. But who is behind the campaign and what do they want? The diverse dwellers include investment banker Roger (Toby Jones), who is eagerly anticipating his £1m bonus, his spendthrift wife Arabella (Rachael Stirling), Polish builder Bogdan (Radoslaw Kaim) who works on the houses in the street, Quentina the Zimbabwean refugee with a PhD who works as a traffic warden (Wunmi Mosaku), local newsagent Ahmed (Adeel Akhtar) and the elderly Petunia (Gemma Jones), who has lived her entire life on Pepys Road, and is now contemplating death in the house in which she was born.

Jens Richter, CEO of FremantleMedia International, said; “Capital is a powerful, intelligent and character driven drama created by one of the most prolific production companies in the world. These impressive deals are a testament to the series’ ability to capture modern society in a way that’s current and universally relevant to a global audience.”

Capital was written by the BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Peter Bowker and executive producers include Derek Wax (The Hour, From There To Here) and Peter Bowker (Marvellous, From There To Here) for Kudos and Lucy Richer (Marvellous, The Casual Vacancy) for the BBC. It is produced by Matt Strevens (Cucumber, An Adventure In Space And Time).
