The power is yours! THR reports Paramount and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions are angling to revive Captain Planet as a feature film. Paramount is negotiating for the rights to the 1990s cartoon series.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers originally ran on TBS from 1990 to 1992. The voice cast included David Coburn, LeVar Burton, Joey Dedio, Janice Kawaye, Scott Menville, Kath Soucie, and Whoopi Goldberg. Its sequel, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, aired from 1993 to 1996.
While there is no word if Scream Queens alum Glen Powell will act in the live-action movie, he and Jono Matt may write the script. Should the deal comes to pass, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and DiCaprio will produce through Appian Way. Back in March, the production company signed a first-look deal with Paramount and Powell.
In the original cartoon series, Gaia selected five young people from around the world to be Planeteers: Kwame from Africa, Wheeler from North America, Linka from the Soviet Union (later Eastern Europe), Gi from Asia, and Ma-Ti from Brazil.
By giving them magical rings with powers of either fire, air, water, the earth, or the heart, Gaia empowered them to stave off environmental disasters. When the Planeteers were unable to solve problems on their own, they would join together to invoke Captain Planet.
This superhero had all of the Planeteers’ abilities, combined. Finally, Captain Planet’s powers were also more potent, to symbolize that we are stronger together.

The project was previously in development at Sony but the rights lapsed. One thing intriguing to Paramount and Appian Way was the subversive take by Matt and Powell on the material. Sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.
The project and its environmental themes are a natural fit for DiCaprio, a well-known environmentalist who often speaks out on issues such as global warming.
Fans almost got a live-action version of Captain Planet, in 2011. Cartoon Network teamed with Angry Filmworks on the project, but it never came to fruition. It seems like this new one might have some legs.
