The Carmichael Show: Season Two to Feature Bill Cosby-Themed Episode

The Carmichael Show TV show on NBC: canceled or renewed?

Last month, NBC announced season two of The Carmichael Show would premiere this spring. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, series creator and star Jerrod Carmichael discussed season two and an upcoming episode that deals with Bill Cosby.

Starring Carmichael, Amber Stevens West, and David Alan Grier, The Carmichael Show centers on the lives of the semi-fictional Carmichael family.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Carmichael said the new season will feature an episode about former NBC sitcom star Bill Cosby:

The episode is [about] the dilemma of any fan. And it’s a thing that I’ve found myself going through with Bill Cosby in my personal life, being a comedian and in the same industry and admiring him. But I think a lot of people go through these things with whoever they’re a fan of, anytime this happens. It’s about that moment of decision, where you’re trying to figure out how to adjust that fan-person relationship. It’s about that moment where you’re trying to figure out: Where do we place Bill Cosby in our minds?”

Carmichael co-wrote the episode, which has network executives both anxious and excited. Jonathan Davis, president of 20th Century Fox Television, which produces The Carmichael Show, says the episode is intended to generate a public discussion:

It gives you butterflies, but the good butterflies – that, ‘Wow, we’re going to see something that’s smart and provocative that will ignite a social conversation in the way that great television should.’ Jerrod and [executive producers] Danielle-Sanchez, Nick Stoller and Ravi Nandan were like, ‘Trust us, we’ve got something great here.’ And when we read the material, we were just blown away. And give NBC credit too. We just said, ‘We have to back this, they’re saying something in that Norman Lear kind of way where it’s funny and it makes you think about all of our hypocrisies and gets you talking. This episode will certainly be part of the cultural conversation.”

This is not the first time The Carmichael Show has explored controversial subjects. In its first season, the series dealt with the Black Lives Matter protests, transgender issues, and gun ownership.

Season two of The Carmichael Show is set to premiere on March 13th.

What do you think? Did you watch season one of The Carmichael Show? Will you tune in for season two?
