Castle: Cancelled ABC Series Continues in Book Form

Castle TV show on ABC: canceled, no season 9

ABC may have cancelled Castle, starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, but the story continues, at least in print. According to The Hollywood Reporter, two new Nikki Heat novels, by “Richard Castle,” are about to storm your castle’s bookshelves.

High Heat, to be published October 25, 2016, begins with a the beheading of a New York journalist by an ISIS-like organization. Next, the terrorists target NYPD detective Heat’s husband, Jameson Rook, and his latest subject, independent presidential candidate Legs Kline. Next up is Heat Storm, slated for publication in spring 2017. The books are the eighth and ninth novels in the Castle book series.

Here is more, from THR:

High Heat is the eighth Richard Castle/Nikki Heat novel. The ninth, Heat Storm, is scheduled for spring 2017. Heat Wave, the first of the series, came out in September 2009, six months after the show’s debut. All seven previous Castle novels have made The New York Times bestseller list.

From the beginning, ABC has embraced the fiction that the author of the fictional Nikki Heat books is the fictional Richard Castle, even going so far as to put a picture of Nathan Fillion (as Castle) on the back.

When asked about it in 2009 by Entertainment Weekly, Castle creator Andrew Marlowe said, “Richard Castle [is the writer]. The roguishly handsome best-selling author of the Derek Storm mystery series. He’s charming. He’s a good writer. And I don’t know why you’re trying to take credit away from him. The guy worked hard on it.”

A little Internet sleuthing suggests mystery writer Tom Straw might be the pen behind the Richard Castle nom de plume. Castle fans seem happy to embrace the idea that the books are indeed by Richard Castle and with the TV show going off the air, the books are where it is at now.

The THR report includes part of the first chapter of High Heat. Check it out.
