Originally produced by Leonard Goldberg and the late Aaron Spelling –- producer of shows like 7th Heaven, T.J. Hooker, and Beverly Hills, 90210 — for ABC, Charlie’s Angels and its stars quickly became a success. The original Angels, Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, were held as perfection in their roles. However, Fawcett left after the legendary first season and Jackson departed from the series in its third year. The public became tired of the concept, didn’t necessarily accept the cast replacements, and viewership began to fall. The show ended after five seasons.
Now, in the year 2011, it looks as if we may see a new Charlie’s Angels series on television. This time though, it will be without a few key parts from the original show: the location (it’s now Miami instead of Los Angeles), the original Charlie (John Forsythe passed away last April) and, as mentioned above, Aaron Spelling. Goldberg is on board as one of the new show’s producers though, along with Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen.
For the new voice of Charlie, the producers have already tapped Robert Wagner. Wagner, now 80, starred in Hart to Hart, another Spelling/Goldberg series that ran for five seasons around the same time as Charlie’s Angels. Goldberg reportedly approached Wagner directly about the role.
According to EW, the producers are currently in search of young ladies to play the Angels. Mark Piznarski, the director of numerous Gossip Girl episodes, has reportedly been asked to direct.
As with all remakes, its unclear if this new Charlie’s Angels will measure up to people’s fond memories of the original. Will it be the next Hawaii Five-0 or the next Bionic Woman?
