What can fans expect from The CW’s upcoming Charmed reboot? Recently, creator Jennie Snyder Urman discussed how the original series compares to the new one, Deadline reports.
As reported earlier, The CW has ordered a reboot of the supernatural drama. The original drama starred Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, and Holly Marie Combs as three sisters who discover that they are powerful witches with supernatural abilities. The show ran on The WB from 1998 to 2006.
During this summer’s TCA press conference, Urman revealed the Charmed reboot will not feature any of the original series’ cast, as of now that is.
The reason for Combs, Milano, Doherty, and Rose McGowan’s absence may be due to the fact that the original cast members, especially Combs, have expressed disappointment about the reboot. Earlier this year, Combs tweeted:
Until you ask us to rewrite it like [exec producer] Brad Kern did weekly, don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. … I will never understand what is fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12 years ago.”
However, Urman says the Charmed reboot is not trying to be the original series. The drama, which “centers on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches,” will explore the diversity of the cast and “explore their unique heritage and the way their different cultures intersect with witchcraft.
The CW boss Mark Pedowitz added:
We wanted a different Charmed. [I hope] people will come and watch [the reboot] and give a chance.”
The CW’s new Charmed reboot premieres on October 14th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
