TV show description:
A supernatural drama the Cleverman TV show draws inspiration from Australian Aboriginal mythological traditions. Set in the near future — when beings of Aboriginal legend live among humans — the story moves between two worlds: The City and The Zone.
In the “regular world” of The City, uniformed, armed Containment Officers patrol the streets to keep people “safe” from Hairypeople, whom the government deems subhuman.
Named for the thick hair covering their bodies, the long-living Hairypeople are exceedingly strong and fast. Because most humans treated them like outcasts and otherwise made them feel unsafe, most retreated to the Zone, where some humans and Hairies try to live together in harmony.
The Zone had long been a ghetto of sorts for the poor and disenfranchised, even before the Hairies sought refuge there. The government then trapped them inside, by building an impenetrable border wall. Those Hairypeople inside the Zone are not allowed to leave. Meanwhile, humans have to travel in and out through a heavily guarded checkpoint.
When a murder spree terrifies the City, people blame the Hairies. The government-funded Containment Authority — which rounds up runaway Hairypeople — threatens the delicate peace in the Zone. However, there are other creatures lurking — including the Namorrodor, which can rip people’s hearts out of their chests.
Only the Cleverman — a chosen one — has the power to reunite these two worlds and discern the real evil behind the attacks.
Koen West (Page-Lochard) is estranged from his family and feels no real connection to Aboriginal culture. Following the mysterious death of his uncle, this unlikely hero finds he is the new Cleverman.
Koen’s half-brother, Waruu (Collins), is his polar opposite. Spiritual and proud of his culture, Waruu fights the oppressive Containment Authority as well as his own demons. He believes he is the true heir to the Cleverman powers and has a hard time coping when he realizes his younger brother has been chosen.
With fear, hatred and greed at epic proportions, can civilisation – and the power of the Cleverman – restore balance, and eliminate threats both known and unknown, which are out to wreak havoc upon every species on Earth?
