Code Black is returning for a second season this fall on CBS, and there is a major shakeup planned for the new season. In fact, Deadline reported that the shakeup and pitch for season two made by the showrunner is the reason for the season two renewal.
What is changing on the series? Code Black is going to use a method that has worked for many seasons on shows like ER and Grey’s Anatomy. Each fall will see the entrance of a new group of residents at the hospital.
This changes means that two regular cast members are departing the series, and two recurring cast members are being bumped to regular cast members. Deadline reported that Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey are leaving the series, and Jillian Murray and Boris Kodjoe are the cast members getting bumped up. It was teased that a male co-lead for Marcia Gay Harden will possibly join the series.
Michael Seitzman said the following about the changes:
“The concept of the show is for each season to begin on the first day for incoming freshman residents, just as in real life there is a cycle of residents coming in and residents either graduating or moving on. Another hallmark of the show is that our fictional hospital is intensely populated. Not only do we average 800 extras per episode, but we have a revolving cast of doctors and nurses who enter and exit the show regularly. Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey are beloved by the audience, as well as the rest of the cast and crew. Their departure is painful for us, is no reflection on the extraordinary work they both did on the show.”
