Commander in Chief: The Geena Davis Series Ended 10 Years Ago

Commander in Chief; ABC TV shows

Hail to the chief. The West Wing isn’t the only political drama celebrating its 10th anniversary. Today marks 10 years since the end of the cancelled ABC series Commander in Chief.

Created by Rod Lurie, the show starred Geena Davis as Mackenzie Allen, the first female President of the United States. The cast also included Donald Sutherland, Harry Lennix, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

Commander in Chief premiered on ABC in fall 2005. However, due to low ratings, ABC decided to fire Lurie as showrunner before ultimately canceling the show in May 2006. Despite low ratings and a short-lived first season, the show did garner some praise and success. For her starring role, Davis won the 2006 Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama.
