The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien: The Former Late Night Host Joins Twitter

After mocking Twitter many times on his NBC shows, Conan O’Brien has given in and joined the 144 character world.

His joining Twitter was announced this afternoon by Aaron Bleyaert, the former Tonight Show blogger. The news spread like wildfire and within an hour, O’Brien had more than 40,000 followers. It looks like he’ll break 150,000 before the end of the day.

His first message? “Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial. Somebody help me.” The verified account lists O’Brien’s bio as “I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account.”

According to his exit settlement from NBC, O’Brien is prohibited from appearing on television until September. While he hasn’t officially made a deal to host a new TV show yet, there are plans afoot to keep “Coco” in the public eye in other ways.

A road tour is reportedly in the works and will be tied into a new Internet presence for O’Brien. Based on the response to his joining Twitter, it looks like he’s off to a good start.

What do you think? Is O’Brien making a good move by focusing on his online presence? Would you pay to see a live tour appearance?
