Constantine: Cancelled? Production Ending But Season Two Possible

Constantine TV show canceled? season 2?TV shows The Flash and Gotham have been doing well this season. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for another DC Comics based series — Constantine. NBC has decided to shut down production after 13 episodes but it’s supposedly not cancelled and there could still be a second season.

Constantine revolves around the travels and work of John Constantine (Matt Ryan), an occult detective. He tries to help the innocent though his soul is already damned to hell. Others in the cast are Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford, and Angelica Celaya.

The supernatural series debuted on October 24th to a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.28 million viewers. It was an okay start for a Fridays at 10pm series.

The numbers plunged about 30% in week two but that was Halloween so an above average decline was to be expected. The ratings rebounded a bit in week three and then dropped again in week four, falling to a 0.8 demo rating and 3.47 million. This past Friday’s numbers went back up again but the ratings are still pretty awful.

Deadline reports that production will be shut down after all 13 episodes of the first season have been produced. NBC isn’t ordering additional episodes at this time but it’s supposedly still in contention for a second season — for now, the optimism is based on last Friday’s increase and the DVR numbers.

Unless Constantine’s numbers continue to improve, it’s hard to believe that the network would put the time and money into producing and launching a second season. They’ve kept low-rated Hannibal around for three seasons (the show that will likely replace Constantine on the schedule in 2015) but only because it doesn’t cost them very much as a licensed show.

What do you think? Do you like Constantine? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? How do you watch? Live, DVR, on demand, or ?
