Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season Three Renewal Explained by Co-Creator of CW Series

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV show on The CW: canceled or renewed?

How did Crazy Ex-Girlfriend get renewed for a third season? Recently, co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna explained the surprising renewal, The Wrap reports.

The musical dramedy stars co-creator Rachel Bloom as Rebecca Bunch, a neurotic lawyer who moves to Southern California in pursuit of her high school crush. The cast also includes Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner, Vella Lovell, and Gabrielle Ruiz.

Despite being the network’s lowest-rated series, The CW renewed it for a third season earlier this year. At a recent screening of the season two finale, McKenna said one of the reasons they were renewed is because of their consistent, loyal fanbase:

It’s the same people. To a person, it’s the same. And at this point because of Twitter, I think we know most of them … We have a very devoted, loyal audience.”

Additionally, the series is a critical hit. Bloom scored a 2016 Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Comedy Series and was nominated again this year.

At this year’s Television Critics Association press tour, CW boss Mark Pedowitz credited the show’s critical success for its renewal:

Critically acclaimed, great programming, sometimes you just leave it on the air and, hopefully, it finds an audience. I’m hoping that happens. And if it doesn’t, I’ll have no regrets of having continued the series on Rachel and Aline’s behalf.”

The season two finale of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs tonight, February 3rd, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
