Dating in the Dark: Decent Premiere Ratings; Keep It or Cancel It?

ABC debuted their latest reality dating show this week and it’s a strange one. Does the viewing audience think Dating in the Dark is worth keeping? Do you?

In Dating in the Dark, the show tries to answer the age-old question, “Is love blind?” Three men and three women live in a large house together but don’t get see members of the opposite sex. They can interact with them only in a pitch black meeting room where viewers can see what’s going on but the participants cannot. After learning about each other, the individuals choose one of the three that they’d like to see in the light. Will their opinion change once they can see the appearance of the other person, or is love truly blind?

The show debuted on Monday night and attracted 6.34 million viewers with a 2.5/8 rating/share of the 18-49 audience. It was second in its timeslot in overall viewers but ranked first in the desirable demo.

Dating in the Dark’s premiere followed a special two-hour “tell-all” episode of The Bachelorette whose last half-hour attracted 8.38 million and a 2.9/8 in the target demographic. That puts Dark’s retention at 76% in total viewers and 86% in the demo.

While those aren’t great premiere numbers, the network is likely pleased. Dark did well in the demo and overall reflected a big improvement over last week’s Here Come the Newlyweds. If next week’s episode does as well, Dark will likely stay around at least long enough for all six episodes to see the light of day. The chances of a second season are still up in the air.

But what did you think? Did you love Dating in the Dark or does the reality series leave you cold? Would you keep it or cancel it?
