Hey Salemites, there’s some good news coming out of the TCA summer press tour. When asked about the status of Days of Our Lives, NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke had some encouraging words, about the soap, since new head-writer Ron Carlivati’s episodes began airing on July 19th, 2017. Soap Opera Digest reports Salke said, “We’re feeling really great about the new team in place and we’re evaluating it as it goes…. We love the new DAYS and we hope it stays on the schedule forever … Everyone’s feeling really good.”
A soap opera, Days of Our Lives first premiered on November 8, 1965. The current NBC cast includes: Lucas Adams, Kristian Alfonso, Lamon Archy, Camila Banus, Mary Beth Evans, Billy Flynn, Galen Gering, Deidre Hall, Drake Hogestyn, Olivia Rose Keegan, Lauren Koslow, James Lastovic, Eric Martsolf, Casey Moss, Stephen Nicheols, Thaao Penghlis, Kyler Pettis, Melissa Reeves, James Reynolds, Suzanne Rogers, Christopher Sean, Josh Taylor, Greg Vaughan, Vanessa A. Williams, and Arianne Zucker.
Days of Our Lives: A Look at the Ratings
NBC most recently renewed Days of Our Lives through 2018 in January of 2017, but there was no mention of an option for a second year in the press release. There has been speculation that it could be the final renewal for the lowest rated broadcast network soap.
As of July 17, 2017, this season of Days was averaging 2.180 million total viewers and a 0.56% in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic. It is down in both measures, by 8.45% and 18.84%, respectively.
We don’t yet have ratings for Carlivati’s first episodes. In this writer’s opinion, however, I expect a boost in the numbers. I had thought his episodes would start airing in early August, but the day his first episode aired, it was so noticeably different (and, in my opinion, better), that I was unsurprised when a web search confirmed it was his work.
What do you think? Are you still watching Days of Our Lives? Have you enjoyed the new writing? Do you think this NBC soap opera should be cancelled or renewed for another season?
