TV show description:
The wife of high school teacher John Lacey (Judd Hirsch) leaves him for his best friend by writing a simple “Dear John” letter.

In the divorce settlement, Wendy (Carlene Watkins, then Deborah Harmon) gets the house, custody of their son Matthew (Ben Savage, then Billy Cohen) and just about everything else.

With his life in turmoil, easy-going John moves into a Queens apartment and joins a support group for singles at the local community center. Unfortunately, John ends up being one of the most sane of the bunch.

Members of the group include egotistical ladies-man Kirk Morris (Jere Burns), compassionate but out-of-touch Kate McCarron (Isabella Hofmann), shy toll-collector Ralph Drang (Harry Groener), naive Mary Beth Sutton (Susan Walters), flighty senior citizen Margie Philbert (Billi Bird) and her quiet boyfriend Tom (Tom Willett).

The group is led by a sex-obsessed Brit, Louise Mercer (Jane Carr).
