The Deep Mad Dark: TNT Orders Memory Drama Pilot

The Alienist TV show on TNT: season 1 (canceled or renewed?)

TNT is delving into the trauma of memories. This week, the network announced they’ve ordered a new TV pilot called The Deep Mad Dark.

From Animal Kingdom writer Megan Martin, the drama “is a propulsive, layered mystery about an intoxicating friendship and how it leads to a brutal act of violence that drives two women in radically different ways.”

Martin will executive produce the project alongside John Wells, Henrik Bastin, and Kristen Campo.

From TNT:

Turner’s TNT has ordered a pilot for The Deep Mad Dark, which is being produced by John Wells Productions and Fabrik Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television and Turner’s Studio T. An atmospheric mystery-thriller about the complexities of female friendship, The Deep Mad Dark pilot is written by Megan Martin (Animal Kingdom, Cult), who also serves as executive producer, along with John Wells (ER, The West Wing, Animal Kingdom, Shameless, Southland), Fabrik CEO Henrik Bastin (BOSCH, The Comedians, American Odyssey) and Kristen Campo (The Killing, The Good Guys).

The Deep Mad Dark opens as Detroit neurosurgeon Polly Lewis embarks on an unorthodox study in the field of memory and trauma. Her once closest friend – the irreverent, brilliant Tash Hollander – comes home after living many years in a strange, off-the-grid community in Belize. Upon her return, Tash insinuates herself into Polly’s life in audacious ways that threaten everything Polly has achieved. But why?

The Deep Mad Dark is a propulsive, layered mystery about an intoxicating friendship and how it leads to a brutal act of violence that drives two women in radically different ways. Set against the landscape of modern Detroit, it explores the power certain friendships have to shape who we are – in ways both beautiful and dangerous.

Earlier this year, Wells and Martin helped usher in the first of TNT’s new breed of drama with the hit series Animal Kingdom. Produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television, Animal Kingdom launched over the summer to rave reviews and finished its first season ranking as one of cable’s Top 5 new dramas for the quarter. The series has already been renewed for a second season to air in 2017.

The Deep Mad Dark marks Wells’ fourth project with TNT, his first being one of the most riveting television series of the past decade: TNT’s Peabody Award-winning police drama Southland. Wells also is executive producer of the TNT pilot Hinges, with executive producer/writer Janine Sherman Barrois, executive producer/director Anthony Hemingway and executive producer Mark Taylor. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of TNT’s first collaboration with Fabrik Entertainment.”
