Designing Women: The CBS Sitcom Debuted 30 Years Ago

Designing Women TV show on CBS

Move over, Girls. Forget Sex and the City. The original female quartet, Designing Women, debuted on CBS 30 years ago today.

Created by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, the sitcom centered on four women and one man who worked at an interior design studio in Atlanta, GA. The cast included Dixie Carter, Jean Smart, Delta Burke, Annie Potts, Meshach Taylor, and Jan Hooks.

The comedy premiered on September 29th, 1986 and lasted for seven seasons before ending in 1993. Notably, regular castmembers Delta Burke and Jean Smart left after season five due to highly publicized behind-the-scenes conflicts. The two were replaced by Hooks, Julia Duffy, and later Judith Ivey. A brief spin-off series, Women of the House, followed Burke’s character, Suzanne Sugarbaker, but was cancelled after only one season.
