Dirty Sexy Money: Baldwin Says TV Show Not Cancelled Yet

ABC’s guilty pleasure, Dirty Sexy Money, has been struggling for sure. This season, the TV show has been averaging just six million viewers and a 1.9/5 rating/share in the desirable 18-49 demographic. The network had ordered 13 episodes for year two with the option of purchasing additional installments if needed. They decided against exercising that option but one of the series’ stars says that it’s not over yet.

As you probably know by now, Dirty Sexy Money follows a family man and lawyer (Peter Krause) who gets talked into representing the wealthy and powerful Darling family; patriarch Tripp (Donald Sutherland), wife Letitia (Jill Clayburgh), and their five grown children — politician Patrick (William Baldwin), promiscuous Karen (Natalie Zea), corrupt clergyman Brian (Glenn Fitzgerald), and immature, party-loving twins Jeremy (Seth Gabel) and Juliet (Samaire Armstrong). Other performers include Blair Underwood, Zoe McLellan, Lucy Liu, Will Shadley, Laura Margolis, Bellamy Young, Candis Cayne, Shawn Michael Patrick, Chloe Moretz, Sheryl Lee, Andrea Smithson, and Daniel Cosgrove.

The cast and crew have completed filming their 13th episode for the season and we’re told it will include a bit of closure. Baldwin is optimistic that it won’t be the series finale. In a statement reminiscent of Brooke Shields’ overly optimistic comments about Lipstick Jungle, the actor says that the show isn’t cancelled yet and is just “on the bubble.”

Appearing on the Today Show on Tuesday, Baldwin said, “ABC has, I believe, cancelled Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies. And Pushing Daisies has like 12 Emmy nominations. Our show, they very specifically said, is not cancelled. They’re holding the actors, the sets, and I think that could be code for if some of their mid-seasons [shows] don’t do well, they’ll bring us back for the back nine or they’ll order something.”

Baldwin conceded that Money is definitely in deep trouble and urged fans to do what they can to save the show.

What’s behind Money’s troubles? The obvious reason is that the show’s audience is shrinking. The actor believes that it’s mostly due to the struggling economy. Baldwin notes, “I think that, between the writers strike definitely hurting television, and I think with the economy going south, and then Wall Street collapsing, I think the networks are, like everybody else, are in full, sort-of, retreat mode. And my show is one thing if nothing else (of course fabulous) but it’s expensive. We’re creating a world where a family is worth $50 billion, and they have to spend money [to make that look].” Baldwin didn’t help to contain costs since he accidentally left his borrowed suit from the show on the plane.

Money isn’t on ABC’s schedule past next week’s episodes. At that point, there will be four episodes left on the shelf. Will the network get around to airing them, order more, or simply say goodbye to the Darling clan forever? Stay tuned!
