Doctor Who: A Black Actor Was Offered the Lead Role

Doctor Who TV show on BBC America: canceled or renewed

For years, Doctor Who has been criticized for its lack of diversity in the lead role. However, current showrunner Steven Moffat recently said the part has been offered to a black actor, Vulture reports.

Peter Capaldi stars as The Doctor right now on the BBC sci-fi drama. Though, with Moffat leaving after season 10 and a new companion already cast, a new doctor might be on the horizon soon.

In a recent interview with the BBC series’ official magazine, Moffat said the role of The Doctor was offered to a black actor after Matt Smith left:

For various reasons, it just didn’t work out. I certainly don’t think there’s ever been a problem with making the Doctor black, which is why it should happen one day.”

Three years ago, Neil Gaiman confirmed the casting news, i09 reports.

I was rather disappointed that Paterson Joseph didn’t get [the role] last time, although I’ve loved Matt’s Eleven.) And yes, I have no doubt there will be [a black Doctor]. (I know one black actor who was already offered the part of the Doctor, and who turned it down.) Just as there will be a female Doctor.”

What do you think? Do you watch Doctor Who? Are you disappointed by The Doctor’s casting?
