Could Doug be making a comeback? Recently, creator Jim Jinkins spoke to Entertainment Weekly about a possible reboot of the Nickelodeon series.
The animated show, which centered on an imaginative young boy and his friends, debuted 25 years ago. In 1996, the show went to Disney and lasted until 1999.
When asked about reviving the series, Jinkins said he already has stories planned:
I haven’t written the whole screenplay, but some stories are written. Skeeter’s his roommate. Judy would be a performance artist off, off, off Broadway, just kind of doing weird stuff. Porkchop would be there – we’re not going to talk about dogs and their real lifespans, but I’ll just let him be.”
However, he revealed that Disney (who owns the rights to the series) has no interested in a reboot:
Disney owns the right to make anything new, and they have no interest right now in anything to do with it. … Maybe if I wrote it like a book and put it out there, Disney would give me permission to do that. I keep qualifying it, I guess out of being a cock-eyed optimist, but right now they explained they’re not interested in moving Doug forward. In the past, they have expressed interest in a play. Now, that would be a great play. So, I don’t know! But I do think I have a great story for fans to get a feel for where Doug is headed, and I thought that would be an awesome thing to deliver.”
In the meantime, Jinkins did reveal what happens between Doug and his crush, Patti Mayonnaise. In the scene, it’s 10 years after they’ve graduated high school, and [SPOILER ALERT] Patti is already in a relationship:
It doesn’t happen because, really, most people don’t end up with their first love. But then again, maybe I do do it! There isn’t some rule! It’s not in the Bible. It’s just that most people don’t. I don’t know the answer yet. But I would predict that what I would do is make it where Patti is maybe not married, but in a serious relationship.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Doug? Would you watch a reboot?
