Enlightened: Why HBO Cancelled the Laura Dern Series

canceled Enlightened TV showLast week, Laura Dern was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the Enlightened TV series. The nomination is likely bittersweet for Dern since the show was cancelled by HBO earlier this year.

At the TCA summer press tour, HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo was asked about the decision to cancel the show. He noted that the cable channel was disappointed that the show’s low ratings didn’t improve in season two.

Lombardo also believes that Dern’s character had completed her journey in a satisfying way.

He said, “The most important element to us in not going forward is that we felt that creatively that the story of Amy Jellicoe had come to a natural resting place, and we thought it was best to end it where we did, so it wasn’t a financial decision, per se. It was really about choices and a creative decision. It worked beautifully and we felt we should end where we ended it.”

What do you think? Are you satisfied with how Enlightened ended? Should HBO have ended the show differently?
