Executive producer David Zabel recently told TV Guide that they’ve come up with great storylines for main characters from ER’s history — including Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney), nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies), and Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle). Zabel said he’s “optimistic that we might be able to get them all. We have a really good story line for every [major] character from the past to show [the actors] what we want to do.” Though he wouldn’t spill on the specifics, he would share, “We have a lot of interesting ways of reuniting past characters. Sometimes in surprising, accidental ways and sometimes in ways where they reach out to each other.”
There’s no word on interest from Margulies or La Salle as yet but Clooney apparently has no interest in putting on his scrubs once again. Clooney’s publicist told Reuters, “He is on record as saying he is not coming back. It is something he has already done. He is busy making movies.”

Even Clooney’s old co-star, Anthony Edwards, is hoping that he’ll reappear for the medical drama’s final run. He told Access Hollywood, “I think he’d be a fool not to, but you know, who knows what’ll happen.” Though his character died in 2001, Edwards was lured back to the show after he received an email from executive producer John Wells. The producers apparently sweetened the deal by making a big donation to Edwards’ favorite charity, Shoe4Africa.org.
As we reported earlier, Edwards’ late Dr. Mark Greene will appear in a flashback that will air on November 13th. Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) and deceased Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) will be seen with him. Though Dr. Greene will only appear in one episode, his presence will continue to be felt in the ER. Alex Kingston is being asked to bring Greene’s widow, Dr. Corday, back for a visit along with their daughter Ella. Rachel, Greene’s daughter from his first marriage, is expected to reappear as a first-year med student.
In addition, Noah Wyle (Dr. John Carter) has been signed for four episodes and Shane West (Dr. Ray Barnett) will return for a single episode. Original castmember Sherry Stringfield isn’t expected to be invited back to the series.
The series is scheduled to air its final episode sometime during May 2009. It’ll be a two-hour episode that will be preceded by a 60-minute retrospective. Who else will be lured back to the NBC drama before County General closes its doors for the last time? Stay tuned!
