Family Tree: Cancel or Renew for Season Two?

Family Tree: season two or cancel?HBO’s new Family Tree TV series recently completed its eight episode first season. There’s been no word yet on the show’s future. Should HBO cancel it or bring it back for a second season instead?

Family Tree is a documentary-style comedy that follows a young man who’s feeling pretty unsure about himself after he loses his job and his girlfriend. That starts to change when a distant aunt dies and leaves him a mysterious box of belongings. This leads him to start investigating his lineage. He uncovers a world of unusual stories and acquires a growing sense of who he and his real family are.

Executive produced by Christopher Guest, the show stars Chris O’Dowd, Nina Conti, and Tom Bennett.

Family Tree may have some devoted fans but there don’t seem to be many of them. It’s HBO’s lowest rated series and first run episodes averaged just 540,000 viewers each week. Though HBO isn’t ratings dependent like the commercial channels, other HBO shows with similar ratings have been cancelled.

On the positive side, Family Tree is a co-production with the BBC so it’s not costing HBO as much as a regular series. On top of that, HBO’s most concerned with image and creating an impression that they have high-quality content. Having a Christopher Guest series fits the bill.

Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully a decision will be announced soon.

But, what do you think? Would you like to see Family Tree return for a second season or, should it be cancelled to make way for something new?
