Fear Itself: Unaired Episodes to Finally Surface as Online Exclusives

If you were a fan of NBC’s horror anthology series, Fear Itself, you’re finally going to be able to see the unaired episodes.

Fear Itself doesn’t have a recurring cast but instead features a new suspense story each week. The series boasts the work of genre directors like John Landis, Stuart Gordon, Brad Anderson, and Rob Schmidt.

The horror show debuted on June 5, 2008 in a disappointing third place for its timeslot. Only 5.26 million tuned in with a 2.0/6 in the 18-49 demographic. The following weeks’ numbers dropped from there and hit a low of 2.93 million viewers and a 1.0/3 in the key demo.

The series was put on hiatus after eight weeks because of the 2008 Summer Olympics. It was expected that Fear Itself might return once the games were over but, not surprisingly, it did not. With five episodes still sitting on the shelf, the series was later confirmed as cancelled.

FearNet began running the previously viewed episodes in December 2008, both online and via their video-on-demand channel. Now, they’ve announced plans to start running the unaired episodes exclusively on FearNet.com beginning September 2nd. They’ll show up shortly thereafter on FearNet OnDemand.

In addition to the episodes, viewers will be able to watch exclusive content like introductions by the directors, “Recipe for Fear” behind-the-scenes featurettes and shot-by-shot analyses of key scenes.

If you’d prefer to watch the complete series on your TV, a collector’s edition DVD set is scheduled for release on September 15th. It comes in a special skeleton tombstone package with extras and director’s cut versions of four episodes.

Did you watch this series on NBC? Any thoughts as to why it didn’t attract a bigger audience? The same reason that Harper’s Island wasn’t a success?
