Friends: Computer Program Uses Old Scripts to Write New Ones

Friends

What’s that line about monkeys and Shakespeare? According to The Daily Dot, a Scottish cartoonist has used an advanced computer program to write new scripts for Friends.

The cartoonist, Andy Pandy, utilized a program called an “artificial recurrent neural network” to generate the scripts.

As The Daily Dot explains, Pandy uploaded all the scripts from all 10 seasons of the NBC sitcom (that’s 236 episodes!), and the program was able to use that data to generate new material. Pandy then posted some of the new scripts on Twitter, to much hilarity.

In one scene, brother and sister Monica and Ross kiss. So maybe the program’s not perfect. But then one scene has Phoebe say, “maybe you need a pizza”—not too far off from the original.

Here’s an example:

What do you think? Would you watch a script generated from a computer program? What makes a good Friends episode? What’s your favorite Friends episode?
