Futurama follows a delivery boy, Phillip J. Fry (Billy West), who is accidentally frozen and then awakens in the year 2999. He takes a job as a cargo delivery boy and meets a very strange cast of characters. Others in the cast include Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, Maurice LaMarche, Frank Welker, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Byrne Offutt, Kath Soucie, Dawnn Lewis, Tom Kenny, Danny Jacobs, and Phil Hendrie.
After being cancelled by FOX, Futurama went on to find greater popularity in repeats and then new life in direct-to-DVD movies. The movies were subsequently chopped up and aired on Comedy Central as regular episodes.
They were so successful that, in June 2009, Comedy Central commissioned 26 all-new installments. Fans were overjoyed by the news but that was short-lived when it was learned that 20th Century Fox Television and the voice actors couldn’t come to a financial agreement. The studio started trying to recast the roles but the fans expressed their upset and the original voice actors thankfully signed agreements to take part in the new episodes.
When the new episodes were ordered, it was said that it was a possibility that they might land on a major network first to help defray the cost for Comedy Central. That apparently hasn’t happened because the cable channel has announced they’ll be starting to air them soon. The first of 12 new episodes will debut on Thursday, June 24th at 10pm.
It’s unknown if additional episodes will be ordered in the future but that will very likely have everything to do with how many people watch the new ones on TV and on DVD.
What do you think? Are you excited that new episodes of Futurama are finally coming? Do you think there will be more after this or will the show be cancelled for good this time?
