Game of Thrones: How the Producers Wanted to End the HBO Series

Game of Thrones TV show on HBO: (canceled or renewed?)

How do you want Game of Thrones to end? Recently, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the final season of the HBO TV show.

The hit fantasy drama is expected to debut its eighth and final season in 2019. The cast includes Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Emilia Clarke.

According to EW, Benioff and Weiss initially planned on released the final season of Game of Thrones as three feature films, but the plan didn’t work out. Weiss says:

It’s what we’re working towards in a perfect world. We end up with an epic fantasy story but with the level of familiarity and investment in the characters that are normally impossible in a two-hour movie.”

And what about the final season? What can fans expect from the HBO series? Co-executive producer Bryan Cogman teases:

It’s about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death. It’s an incredibly emotional, haunting, bittersweet final season, and I think it honors very much what George set out to do — which is flipping this kind of story on its head.”

In the interview, Benioff also revealed the final season will include the series’ biggest battle yet:

Having the largest battle doesn’t sound very exciting — it actually sounds pretty boring. Part of our challenge, and really, Miguel’s challenge, is how to keep that compelling… we’ve been building toward this since the very beginning, it’s the living against the dead, and you can’t do that in a 12-minute sequence.”

What do you think? Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? Are you excited for the final season?
