Game of Thrones will return to HBO in April, and fans of the series were dealt a blow on Friday night by George R.R. Martin. The author of the book series that the television series is based upon wrote a candid blog post to his fans that made them aware that the next book in the series, The Winds of Winter, would not be released before season six arrives.
This means that the television series will spoil events that will happen in that book. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin said the following about missing the deadline for The Winds of Winter:
“You wanted an update. Here’s the update. You won’t like it. The Winds of Winter is not finished. Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You’re disappointed, and you’re not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed… but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me.”
Martin went on to say that is likely going to be months before the book is done. He has several chapters left to write, and then he will need to rewrite. He does a lot of rewriting after his initial draft is done. Martin expected to have the first draft of the book completed in October, but a number of things prevented that from happening.
