Game of Thrones: George RR Martin Has a Big Twist You Won’t See on HBO

Game of Thrones TV show on HBO: season six (canceled or renewed?)

The long night is coming, and the dead come with it. George RR Martin tells IGN that his next installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series contains a twist that will occur in HBO‘s Game of Thrones TV series. Watch the interview, below.

Even though the TV show is based on the books, the production’s writers have gotten ahead of Martin, and in some cases have killed off characters who are still alive in the novels. Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) and Jojen Reed (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) are two such characters. Could one of them feature in Martin’s book-exclusive twist?

Maybe. Without giving away the plot of The Winds of Winter, Martin did tease that the twist involves a couple of characters, one of whom is dead on the show but not in the books. Martin tells IGN, “The show can’t do this stuff, because they killed a character that I have not killed.”

A self-admitted slow writer, Martin seems to have come to terms with not being able to finish the books ahead of the show. In the interview he says, “The show has caught up and is in the process of passing me. Ideally, I would have liked to have finished the books, and have the story complete, but the show moves at a faster pace than I do.” He has this reporter’s sympathy.
