Game of Thrones: HBO Showrunners Confirm the Length of the Final Season

It looks like the last two seasons of Game of Thrones will be shorter than usual. Recently, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed how many episodes will be in season eight of the HBO TV series, EW reports.

Earlier, it was reported musician Ed Sheeran will guest star in the upcoming seventh season. He joins regular castmembers Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Aidan Gillen, Kit Harington, Diana Rigg, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Iain Glen.

At SXSW this weekend, Benioff and Weiss revealed season seven will only be seven episodes long, meaning the eighth and final season will have six episodes.

It’s only going to be six episodes for the final season. From the beginning we’ve wanted to tell a 70-hour movie. It will turn out to be a 73-hour movie, but it’s stayed relatively the same of having the beginning, middle and now we’re coming to the end. It would have been really tough if we lost any core cast members along the way, I’m very happy we’ve kept everyone and we get to finish it the way we want to.”

The new season of Game of Thrones premieres on HBO on July 16th.
