Is The Get Down in trouble? Variety reports the initial ratings for the new Netflix series have been lower than expected.
From Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis, the drama explores the dying days of disco and the emergence of hip hop in late ’70s New York City. The cast includes Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smits, and Giancarlo Esposito.
The Get Down, which is the most expensive series Netflix has ever produced, just premiered its first six episodes on August 12th. However, according to Symphony Advanced Media, the flashy music drama has only received an estimated “3.2 million total viewers among U.S. adults 18-49, with an average audience rating in the demo of 2.33” during its first month.
For comparison, season four of Orange is the New Black garnered 15.56 million within the same demo and timeframe. Netflix famously does not release ratings for their TV shows and has not yet announced whether The Get Down has been cancelled or renewed.
