When one door closes another opens, or does it? The Good Wife TV series finale airs Sunday, May 8, on CBS. Are creators and showrunners Michelle King and Robert King considering a spin-off of the popular drama series? According to Variety, the couple said they have not “ruled out the idea.”
Here is more from Variety:
“It’s very preliminary,” Michelle King said. “And a little bit early to be talking about it…But there is a possibility.”
Ultimately, the showrunners admit they are ready to finish the series, and are pleased their tenure will correspond with the show’s finale.
“You hate the idea of Julianna going on and being in someone else’s hands. There is an ownership feeling about it,” Robert King said.
Back in February, The Hollywood Reporter asked the Kings about a Good Wife spin-off. Here’s more from THR:
Over the years, the show has become known for it’s wide cast of colorful characters reaching far beyond the series regulars. When asked about a potential spin-off, the Kings pointed to popular recurring characters played by Carrie Preston and Martha Plimpton, who both won Emmys for their work on the show.
“What would be fun is if you could find a way to spin off an ensemble that maybe wasn’t at the center stage of Good Wife,” Robert said.
Added Michelle: “At this point, nothing’s off the table. But there’s nothing formal, and sure, maybe. We’re not saying no to anything at this point.”
Over the weekend, THR asked Good Wife co-star, Christine Baranski about a potential spin-off:
There were rumblings of a spin-off. Had you heard anything about that? Was there ever talk of a Diane spin-off?
There’s always talk about spin-offs as shows are ending. They did the same thing when I was on the Cybill show, they talked about it. I think it’s a way for people to psychologically pad themselves and think, ‘Oh, well, OK. Maybe it will continue.” I’m not in a position to say anything about that. I simply don’t know. God knows the Kings will continue to write because they’re brilliant writers. I really and truly hope to be involved in whatever they’re doing in the future just because it’s been such a privilege to work with them. I always thought they understood me as an actress and they wrote beautifully for actors and they wrote women very well. So, of course I would hope to cross paths with them again.
