Greek: Series Creator Talks Reunion Movie and Series Reboot

Greek TV show on Freeform: revival movie; season 5 (canceled or renewed?)

At its April 7th Upfront presentation, Freeform announced it is making a holiday movie reuniting the characters from the network’s Greek TV series. Greek: The Reunion movie will revisit the characters from the original series, with a five-year reunion at Cypress Rhodes University. Greek was cancelled by ABC Family in 2011, after four seasons of 74 episodes.

Greek creator Patrick Sean Smith is discussing the project, which is currently in development. He also talks about how the stars feel. The cast of Greek includes: Clark Duke, Scott Michael Foster, Spencer Grammer, Paul James, Jake McDorman, Amber Stevens West, Dilshad Vadsaria, Jacob Zachar, Aaron Hill, and Zack Lively.

In a recent interview with EW, Smith talked about his plans for the upcoming Greek TV show reunion movie.

Why now?
It is five years from the last season of the show, and in that fourth season, we saw Casey (Spencer Grammer) and Ashleigh (Amber Stevens West) and Evan (McDorman) graduate, so the TV movie is picking up, in part, five years from their graduation.

And it will be holiday-themed?
We’re still figuring out how to tie that holiday element to a class reunion. Romy and Michele, for me, is the quintessential class reunion movie of all time, so [we’re] trying to do the event justice but then also find something that will tie in to the time of year Freeform is considering premiering the movie.

What has the cast said about coming back?
I think everybody was surprised by [Freeform’s] announcement because, at this point, it still is only in development. I hadn’t told anybody because I didn’t want anybody to get too excited until it was a little bit further down the field, but since it was announced, I’ve talked to all the cast and they’re all super excited. It’s a fingers-crossed situation.

EW also asked Smith what he thinks it would take Greek: The Reunion Movie to be greenlit. Unsurprisingly, the creator thinks it will take a great script. He is working on that, right now.

When asked if he’s ever considered rebooting the Greek TV series with a inbound class at Cypress Rhodes, Smith said, “It’s certainly something that’s been discussed.… It feels like a world that still could continue to live on with new characters. That’s just up to Freeform if they want to do that.”
