As the writers strike heads into its second week, production is slowing down but casting is going pretty strong. What are the stars of past TV shows up to? Read on…
Sasha Alexander (Dawson’s Creek) and Danny Masterson (That 70’s Show) have been added to the cast of Jim Carrey’s upcoming Warner Bros. comedy Yes Man. Alexander will play “Lucy” while Masterson will play Carrey’s best friend. Masterson can next be seen in Gregg Araki’s Smiley Face alongside Adam Brody (The O.C.), John Krasinski (The Office), Marion Ross (Happy Days), and the late Roscoe Lee Browne (Soap).
Derek Magyar (Star Trek: Enterprise) is currently shooting an episode of Courteney Cox’s Dirt series. No word on when the episode will air.
Julie Benz (Angel) is currently in Montreal shooting the comic book-based sequel The Punisher: War Zone. Aside from her ongoing role on Showtime’s Dexter series, you’ll be able to see Benz in Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo in January.
D.B. Sweeney (Jericho) is playing World War II Colonel Driscoll in Spike Lee’s Miracle at St. Anna. The film’s expected to be released in 2009 and also stars James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Laz Alonso (One on One), and Walton Goggins (The Shield).
Veronica Mars’ Sydney Poitier (daughter of legendary Sidney) has been cast in NBC’s Knight Rider pilot movie. She’ll be playing a feisty FBI agent who dislikes Mike Tracer (Justin Bruening), the son of the original series’ Michael Knight.
Michael Trucco (Battlestar Galactica) will play the lead in the upcoming comedy The Man of Your Dreams. The movie revolves around a womanizer who uses his talents to help romantically-challenged women.
James Marsters (Angel) will be playing a villain once again in the upcoming Dragonball movie that’s based on the popular Japanese manga TV series, comics and games. Marsters will play the evil Piccolo opposite Justin Chatwin’s heroic Goku. James Wong (executive producer/writer on both The X-Files and Millennium) will direct the action picture.
Wallace Shawn (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) has landed a four-episode story arc on Showtime’s The L Word. He’ll be playing William Halsey, the financier of her Jenny’s film.
Look for George Segal (Just Shoot Me!) as a guest star on ABC’s Private Practice. The Academy Award winner will be playing the grandfather of receptionist William Cooper (Veronica Mars’ Chris Lowell).
K.D. Aubert (Clueless) and Chris Williams (The Wedding Bells) have joined the cast of Jeff Balis’ Still Waiting. The film’s expected to be released next year and also stars Steve Howey (Reba), Vanessa Lengies (American Dreams), and John Michael Higgins (Ally McBeal).
Matt Gerald (The Shield) has been cast as the lead villain in James Cameron’s Avatar. He’ll be starring opposite Michelle Rodriguez (Lost), and Joel Moore (LAX, E-Ring). Filming begins this month in Los Angeles and New Zealand.
You can see Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Taryn Manning (Drive), and Jane Seymour (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) in the indie film called After Sex. It’s a comedy that explores the relationships of nine couples who have one thing in common, they’ve all just had sex. The film’s been released in other countries and is expected to be seen in the U.S. soon.
Look for Rob Morrow (Northern Exposure, currently Numb3rs), Beverly Todd (Six Feet Under), and Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) in the Christmas movie called The Bucket List. The film stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman (The Electric Company) as two terminally-ill cancer patients who hit the road with a wish list of things to do before they die.
Unfortunately, Paul Reubens’ guest shot on Pushing Daisies as a homeopathic antidepressant salesman didn’t work out. Fortunately, he’s got another role on the ABC series. Look for him in the November 21st episode as a strange character named Oscar Vibenius.
Two more actors have joined the cast of FOX’s drama pilot The Oaks. Michael Rispoli (The Black Donnellys) and Romy Rosemont (CSI) are the latest additions to the ensemble. Rosemont replaces previously announced co-star Gina McKee.
Alaina Huffman (Painkiller Jane) has been signed to appear in an upcoming episode of Smallville as the Black Canary. The January 10th episode will also mark the return of Green Arrow/Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley). Though the two will be at odds initially, they’re expected to hook up romantically — just as they do in the comics.
Bernie Mac (The Bernie Mac Show) has struck a deal to do a new sitcom for FOX. Mac will star as an outspoken dad who ends up living with and working for his introverted son. Stay tuned!
